to avoid misunderstanding: it is NOT about YOU follow the bot, but the hot follow you.
So if you are able to remove the bot from the list of your followers without block - yes, that should do the same. But my (n00b) understanding of mastodon api is: this isn’t possible, therefore the recommended way is block/unblock 🙃
