2. The Myth of Normal:
Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture
Trauma is a major factor in shaping our mental health and behavior; it even influences our society because it can lead to addiction and other illnesses that affect us all.
In my case, over the years, it has manifested as anger and acts of despair. For a long time, I lacked the composure to accept the things I couldn't change and to tackle the things I could change. I struggled to understand that I could simply change them.
This book is helpful for anyone who sometimes struggles, who may not understand why people react in certain ways, and who wants to understand themselves better and more deeply in order to cultivate better relationships.
Gabor Maté's work is something I'd like to delve much deeper into. I find him to be an incredible researcher and he has a compelling and accessible way of explaining these complex topics.
What I have learned from this Book :
1. Understanding what trauma is and its impact on our lives.
2. Recognizing how trauma causes a disconnect from our physical selves.
3. Identifying how trauma restricts our ability to adapt and respond to different situations.
4. Acknowledging how trauma alters our perception of the world and our self-image.
5. Realizing how trauma can make us feel disconnected from the present moment.
6. Exploring the steps necessary to dismantle the belief in a "normal" that overlooks these experiences.
