I'm guilty of saying something sucks if I encounter enough problems over a short timespan. Lightning isn't the most reliable thing I've ever used but it doesn't suck.
The self-custodial part is daunting. You spend years being reminded to take extreme care of your sats but then running a Lightning node seems to require that you lock up hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin inside channels with strangers, without the same assurance of security you've come to enjoy from a hardware wallet.
