Why do beautiful women smoke?
You can thank Edward Bernays for that.
It started when first-wave feminism was hijacked by the cigarette companies during the ‘Torches of Freedom’ campaign.
The idea of a cigarette being a symbol of female empowerment and freedom from patriarchy was insanely successful, thanks to the use of imagery of beautiful women smoking.
It was too successful, however. And smoking grew to be viewed as feminine.
Enter the Marlboro man.
