In the Bible, the archangel Michael is explicitly mentioned in Revelation 12:7–12, where he fights Satan and casts him out of heaven:
Revelation 12:7: War breaks out in heaven
Revelation 12:8: Michael and his angels fight against the dragon and his angels, but the dragon is not strong enough and they lose their place in heaven
Revelation 12:9: The dragon, also known as Satan, is hurled down to earth, along with his angels.
This defeat of Satan at the coming of Jesus marks the separation of the New Testament from Judaism. In the Old Testament, Satan's formal role was as accuser, but Michael's victory over Satan prevents him from having further access to God in this role.
In the Bible and the Qurʾān, Michael is often depicted as the "great captain" and leader of the heavenly hosts. He is also portrayed as a warrior who helps the children of Israel.
