Tree lines in temperate zones are sensitive to long term lowest temperature. The few trees at the line are the most rugged species. That is why they are there. There is no difference of what you wrote 100m higher or lower, e.g. Sahara freight.
The next line of less rugged species is even more sensitive to extreme minus temperatures etc.
Then there are huge glaciers with a big watershed and they retreat too. The focus on the giant cold blobs is misleading. I live here, not there.
