For Android users:
To stop photos from all your WhatsApp individual chats and groups being saved to your phone's photo storage:
1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap More options > Settings > Chats.
3. Turn off Media visibility.
This will only stop the media from being stored from this point on. You will need to review your stored photos/videos to remove anything already downloaded.
