Almost embarrassed to say this but...TIL Lafayette was one of Washington's _infantry_ commanders, not a naval commander.
We [Americans] all learn how the French navy came to our rescue, and that Lafayette was a key person, and I'd just grown up assuming he was the fleet admiral.
