i think a lot of mental illnesses are overly (usually self) diagnosed and then further exacerbated by attaching it to your personality and using it to get praise or sympathy and whats worse is usually these conditions are just treated with medications when a lot of them can be controlled or mitigated with healthy lifestyle choices or taking steps to overcome them like anxiety has been medically proven to be curable if you take slow steps outside your comfort zone.
The 'mental health awareness' movement has largely just exacerbated the issue and has created a group of people that literally give themselves mental illnesses.
also my own personal guess but i think it has something to do with pharmaceutical companies with how much they stand to make from the over diagnosis of 'lifelong' illnesses that require expensive meds.
