i would've said everybody knew what it was-- well, i DID say that, didn't i?-- & awareness of kayfabe has only grown bigger since the 80s because reality TV/staged entertainment has only gotten bigger
now the whole world is fake news not just the WWE
whereas "real" competitive contact sports like boxing & football are slowly falling into disrepute as we realize those head injuries are also real
