meta quest os is android under the hood. you can technically access it file system, install apks, maybe even root it.
it has a debug mode it’s kinda like a official jailbreak, lets you install alt stores like sidequest, bypassing quest store.
hardware is solid on quest 3. but if you’re after future hardware upgrades, look into pc vr
I'm a big fan of VR, but I don't agree when you say Meta is the only decent option. You talk in your post about immersiveness, but that's what the "niche" (as you call them) headsets are attempting to maximize.
I recommend people get an OG HTC Vive if they have a budget and can only afford Meta range product. At least vive has an upgrade path toward supporting the highest quality VR you can get and with limited vendor lock in.
