I think trying to read and write in any language before you can have a conversation is a fool's errand, and I don't mind learning the tones. I think they make Thai sound lilting and beautiful.

The hardest part for me is learning to create the unfamiliar sounds that exist in Thai but not English. But the actual words are often much more simple than their Western counterparts, and with no conjugation. So in that sense it is not as complicated as other languages.
