There are several problems with bitcoin that monero addresses. Most things implemented in monero were originally proposed solutions for bitcoin that were never adopted.
Privacy - Insanely important yet downplayed for the most part in bitcoin. Censorship resistance in the real world requires privacy. What good is unconfiscateable bitcoin if you're put under duress, thrown in a cage, or worse? Protects users.
Fungibility - Not only fungible on a protocol level, but also fungible in the real world where actors discriminate based on coin history. 1 XMR = 1 XMR because no unique history can be gleaned and tied to individuals or activities. 1 BTC =/= 1 BTC in the real world.
Dynamic block size, Tail emission, and RandomX ASIC-resistant mining are a few other solutions designed to overcome shortcomings in bitcoins design.
