The problem with QG is that beyond lowest level approximations, everything you try to calculate diverges. This is true in any quantum field theory, but in the Standard Model we have clever ways of absorbing the infinities into the definition of charges and masses. This is called renormalization. This technique fails for spin 2 particles, such as gravitons. There were some claims in the past that maybe the infinities in QG cancels each other, especially if you increase the symmetries of the theory--hence supergravity and superstrings. But that didn't work.
