The US used bacteriological weapons against North Korea during the Korean war: flies and spiders infected with the plague, cholera and typhus, as well as chemical weapons. Americans are on tape confessing to these heinous crimes, expressing intense feelings of guilt. In order to cover up the American war crimes, they came up with the story that these Americans were captured and brainwashed by the Chinese, that the Soviet Chinese had perfected brainwashing techniques able to make people believe they did things they didn't do. It spawned a gigantic cover-up operation known as MK Ultra which went on for some 20 years looking for truth serum and mind control drugs as a counter-operation to the fictitious Chinese one, and which was eventually shut down as "worthless". The truth is that you are in control of your own mind, and your mind is far too complicated for it to be controlled otherwise. And these people who confessed to committing war crimes were making honest confessions. They completely failed to find a way to mind-control people, other than the old-fashioned "lying". That is the only technique that works, and it is the technique they continue to use.
