Back in the day, if I'm a happy user of Foo 11 and you release Foo 12, I can look at the new feature list and decide if it's worth my $70 .
But with the "upgrades free" app store model, you have two choices: subscription revenue, or abandon Foo to work on Bar and later abandon Bar in favor of Baz. Given those choices, yay subscriptions! But I miss the old model.
