As open source software with strong privacy and an open, federated community, #Mastodon is awesome for us normal users.\n\nBut powerful forces don't want Mastodon to succeed.\n\nAn inferior alternative such as #Threads, which is a privacy nightmare, gets the hype because (1) it has a multi-billion dollar company backing it; (2) companies flock to and push a platform where they can advertise their products; and (3) celebrities and so-called influencers want an algorithm which pushes their posts and helps them go viral.\n\nMoney talks.
