There is another ways to do it - the old computer that was outdated is always a classic, but -
Now you can run Linux off a USB stick, so getting a distribution on a stick and booting from it (even machines at work, generally speaking) can work.
And -
You can check around for a local Linux User Group (LUG) in the area to get help getting started. This is also a great way to meet people who will help. Find your local LUG. :)
