… I did know someone who got his thumb successfully reattached, though. We were all at an endurance ride in the Sierras, and he was off the horse running beside it. He was using thin rope reins, and his thumb was in a loop when the horse spooked. They caught the horse and got him back to camp, and *another rider* found the thumb and got it to camp too, and they both got an expensive helicopter ride.
I was at that ride but missed the drama, and I heard the story from the rider at a later event.
