well if you consider the impossible environment they were in where more than 20 million people a fifth of their population died fighting Nazi Germany and other imperialist regimes and even more from natural famines died then they were surely stuck with traditional ideas especially when to recover the lost population they had to push for anti abortion laws
It's the same concept behind China's one child policy which although was draconian still stopped their population from expanding any further and in fact encouraged stable numbers amongst their population and this is China which is not even a socialist country and is more state capitalist imperialist country
socialists understand that some strict measures have to be taken or the whole country could collapse like how we seen with many nations affected by wars
