This came up because Mastodon instances are being spammed pretty hard and Masto’s lead dev, who already has a spotty record with accessibility, suggests hCAPTCHA:

Sadly, no progress on a request to replace it:

I am not an instance admin, so have no quick-fix suggestions (tho switching to invite-only might be a first step).
But since bots are as good (better) at solving CAPTCHAs than humans, enabling it is only guaranteed to block disabled users.
