Part of saying they are not trying to attract guys is that the picture of attractiveness they are trying to present includes nonchalance. I mean, I'm old enough that, if I put on a pair of earrings, I can say, "Yeah, I thought I was supposed to because it's Christmas," but part of the picture some women are trying to present is, "Oh, how did this dress get on me? It must have fallen on. I don't actually have to make any effort; the gorgeousness just happens."
I can understand it to that degree. If they push the point, though, that's really annoying.
