Yes and no. Prostitution more closer to slavery for much of the history. It was not a lifestyle women actively pursued and once you found yourself in that life there was no going back, literally. You'd be prevented by law enforcement from even leaving the red light district. It wasn't until the Meiji period where the can of worms was opened and prostitution became a socially acceptable major industry and Japan became famous for its whores. Whatever issues existed after that time, the post 1945 constitution exacerbated it dramatically.

Geishas are a bit different, but that movie from a decade or so ago gave westerners the idea that Geishas weren't just high class whores. This is false.
