Fun Fact

In Polish folklore it was once believed that the devil rapes dogs. During the late Middle Ages Catholic priests came up with that excuse when raped dogs were found in settlements. Eventually the phrase "Dog of the Devil," (ie that you're a dog-whore of Satan) became one of the worst insults in the German language: Teufelshund, or Tuefelshunde (plural). Originally it was used by Poles for foreigners.
During WWI German troops often used that slur for enemies, something other armies were aware of, but evidentially it wasn't their biggest concern. However when the US entered the war Americans often heard that phrase, and the British troops made them believe it meant something like "hellhounds." The Americans were proud and started to use that phrase to refer to themselves, however they go the word wrong and believed it was "tuefel hunden," not "teufelshunde."
Today the United States Marine Corps still uses the nickname "teufel hunden" (or "devil dogs,") apparently unaware that it refers to US Marines as dogs that get assraped by the devil.
