I'm more of a product first developer, as the author points out, they are pre product market fit. The only thing that matters is if there is a market for their product (for their code.)
Once something is established, has multiple teams, with many engineers, you need a lot of code first just to keep the dumb thing running; let alone scaling due to high demand and/or implementing new technologies.
Bitcoin Core is code first, can't screw up the base layer.
