The Republic is definitely a book worth meditating on. Even just how it is structured and my reaction to reading it for the first time amazes me. It broke so many book rules for me and showed me that a book can still be compelling even though they are just sitting around having a conversation in one room for most of it. But it felt like being transported elsewhere. Perhaps I should give the other books you mentioned a read some time. Are there other books like I mentioned that break the modern rules but turn out good? I think that is really interesting to read and figure out what worked so well for it.
I like it too. I don't want to be surrounded with lots of crap. Just a few really nice things will do well. I'll have to think about the fountain pen. And what slick paper feels like. I think high quality paper is good too.
