If I were a gambler, I'd bet they escaped. They look to be in very good condition. In my experience, usually people don't dump livestock until they've neglected or abused them long enough for it to be evident. They look clean and well-fed, hooves in good shape. And as you say, dumping one with a brand that can be traced back to you is pretty dumb...
