JPEG-XL and jpegli (both part of
https://github.com/libjxl) are really impressive. I tested it with a few images, and the results are pretty consistent. Visually, they look the same to me. One example:
Original JPEG: 1.4mb
WebP: 361kb
JPEG with jpegli: 329kb (smaller than the webp 😮)
JXL: 152kb 🤯
(jpegli has 100% browser support because it is just JPEG. JXL is only in Safari right now.)
