I really enjoyed listening to Troy (as always) talking about death, religion and sardines. And I say that as a “functional atheist”.

However, writing this sitting in Norway, I found the last comments from Troy on Norway as a “socialist” country, and how the childcare and education situation is just fueled by oil, as pretty superficial. Of course we are spoiled, and this extreme high living standard is probably not sustainable. But how come Iraq, Nigeria and other oil rich countries are not experiencing the same abundance for the majority of their populations? How come Sweden, our closest neighbor, who has zero oil, still has an equally if not better education and child care system? Its more foundational than where your income comes from: it's about how you organize your commons; about small income differences, and high mutual trust. The foundation that has enabled what Troy saw here was set up long before oil was discovered in the 1970s. Well, I'll stop there. Please think deeper! Be empirical!

(reposting this since I figured Troy is now on Nostr)
