With twitter there’s a single server and service that does content moderation and filtering. Don’t like their decisions, don’t use twitter.
With at_protocol if you’re using the bsky.social PDS server that bluesky runs, it’s the same. But as with Nostr you can choose to use a different or your own PDS server and then you’re not subject to bluesky’s decisions.
This is basically the same thing as what
jb55 (npub1xts…kk5s) does with Damus which connects to a default relay run by the app creator. Yes Will and Jay are making very different decisions about what content to filter, but functionally it’s the same.
In both cases, users opt in to which set of rules they want to use. The freedom is in the agency that users have to continue participating in the network while they choose what or if they want a filtering / moderation system.
