Each animal has its own place in the structure. A dog's fundamental identity is tied to the Alpha, which was my wife - didn't bother me, no democracy among dogs, I just fit in a different place.
But the cats, that's my emotional territory, we have three and their relationships with us and each other are complex. Each needs affection and individual attention. Cats are indoors, dogs on leashes and leaders.
It's a mistake to treat pets like humans. They get unhappy.
