The Fediverse needs to reach critical mass and a broad, non-technical public, instead of only few activists.
Mastodon is only one part of it and a central onboarding does not limit the rest of the Fediverse to run federated instances and develop independant, successful projects (e. g. Pixelfed, hopefully Friendica).
