James Earl Carter Jr. was born October 1st, 1924 in Plains, Georgia.

When he was elected as the 39th President of the United States in 1976, he used the slogan "A leader, for a change." A former naval officer, peanut farmer and Georgia governor, his lack of national political experience proved advantageous as he sought to rebuild public trust following the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War. During his time in office, Carter pushed for environmental protection and energy-reform legislation.

Out of office, few Presidents remained as civically engaged as Carter. He authored numerous books and regularly volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. In 1982, with his wife Rosalynn, Carter co-founded the Carter Center in Atlanta to promote international peace and human rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work.
