I don't enjoy meetings, especially when they devolve into debates. This setting doesn't encourage critical thinking, but rather persuasion. People often rely on arguments from authority or personal attacks, appearing knowledgeable but actually demonstrating ignorance.
I'm not immune to these errors myself. When I catch myself stating, "X, a brilliant person, thinks this, so it must be good," I feel a wave of discomfort. I recognize that I'm not genuinely winning the debate but merely trying to force my viewpoint by hiding behind an image of expertise. This realization pushes me to study more and build real arguments instead of resting on my perceived authority.
