Orthodox Christians in Ukraine are facing persecution from both Russian forces and the Ukrainian government. Russian forces have targeted Orthodox Christians who are not affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church, leading to the closure, destruction, or expropriation of at least 206 churches, the kidnapping, torture, illegal deportation, or murder of many pastors and priests, and the arrest and imprisonment of clergy and confiscation of church property in Russian-occupied territories.
The Ukrainian government has also targeted religious organizations considered to have ties with Russia, such as the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which is affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate. The government has passed legislation known as Law 3894, which will be fully enforced on May 24, 2025, and will effectively ban the UOC and any affiliated groups deemed to be Russian-influenced or sympathetic to Russia.
