It's walkable, with good public transport. I gave in and got rid of the car a year and a half ago: it was barely seeing any use.
I suspect the USA will be one of the last nations to de-automobilize itself simply because of the nature of their suburban sprawl. (A lot of real estate will have to be demolished and restructured first.)
