reading up on my church history and learning about the cadaver synod of 897.
pope stephen vi had his predecessor formosus exhumed and put the dead body on trial for violating various papal laws.
the dead formosus was found guilty, desecrated, buried again, exhumed again and then thrown into the tiber.
this disturbed enough people that stephen was then imprisoned and strangled while in jail.
a few years later the church prohibited future corpse trials.
