People forget that Gene Roddenberry had tremendous influence over Star Trek fans between 1966-1990. He was basically the leader of a media cult. If he denounced a Paramount product it would have had a serious impact on the bottom line. This was such a major issue that Paramount paid him off to shut up between 1980-1986 regarding the movies he had nothing to do with, then finally capitulated and let him run Star Trek TNG as he pleased.
