You might not understand or agree, but it's my empathy that drives me to be so blunt.

Maybe it's a cultural difference?

Being a New Yorker, I will often say, "It's your funeral", when I disagree with somebody's planned course of action, but I'm not willing to use force to stop them even if I think they are being unreasonable or willfully ignorant. Sometimes gentler statements like the following aren't enough:

I don't think this is a good idea.
I'm not sure you've thought this through.
Are you sure the risk is worthwhile?

Suppose I'm with a friend who's had one too many and is about to ask out a woman who we both know is married (or dating somebody with a violent temper). I'll try to talk him out of it, but if he insists I'll tell him, "It's your funeral." If he's not too drunk, the idiom might dissuade him where gentler language would not.
