it's relatively easy to track Mozilla's history into abandoning privacy in a ship-of-theseus kind of way.

In 2017, they received pushback for enabling telemetry by default, for the first time ever. Today, that telemetry includes sending advertisement data to advertisers.

It's much harder to track the origin of their promises, but it's pretty obvious from community response that a lot of people believed them for a long time, and with good reason
