I would toss generational trauma in at this point. Did you notice there is a lot more attention on that nowadays? I see two things happening: On the one side, gouvernments get more extreme in their authoritarian tendencies. On the other, i see people care more about each other, taking care of past trauma instead of just being a dick as they had learned.
It just seems a little late for that positive part. It can't affect the powerful, since they keep apart from us commoners. And they got so greedy that only excessive violence can secure their continued power.
I don't think common people got worse, on average. I'd guess many are just very, very tired? Smartphone damage, hopelessness from the increasing inequality?
After all, helping (as most things) works best when done as a large group, to distribute the burden. So cutting social programs, inciting hate and dividing people, that does affect the ability to help others in a large way.
I don't think people want to help less. I think the price of helping, relative to what resources an average person has at their disposal, has risen sharply.
