Fun fact: DVD-RAM was specifically designed to be used like a regular random-access block device. I never tried, but you probably could use dd with one of those.

DVD-RAM is extremely unusual for an optical disc format. It's basically the optical equivalent of a floppy or hard disk, with concentric tracks, hard sectors (that you can see), and 100,000+ write cycles.

DVD-RAM never caught on, though, perhaps because it was expensive and USB flash drives aren't.
