I like COSS too, but there's one way in which this trend will go counter to the user's interests (like every institution does): COSS projects will never make the effort to make themselves unnecessary. Standardization, interoperability, infrastructural integration will all suffer if this is *the* way open-source software gets done in the future. It's the Shirkey principle at work.
