My trick for that is to try to actually answer the questions. On this day it was a "What is __ made of?"-pattern. I tricked her by usually having an answer (and being honest when I didn't). She would then take my answer and ask what *it* is made of. So I would answer again.
Etc.
My understanding of physics meant that I repeatedly came to a halt with "Quarks.", followed by "I don't know, I'm pretty sure no one does."
