On most modern drivers for Xorg XCopyArea ends up being essentially a memmove AFAIK. So that is generally how you'd make scrolling faster if you did in fact have a DDX. You move it up, then draw just the new area.

But the GTK 3 terminal has been broken in this regard for some time, doing *full* redraws anyway (a bug of course).
