You're right: the world is run on money, but people are accustomed to using social media, instant messaging clients etc. for decades without paying a dime. All because of ads and big data.

But that being said, bigger players have fallen in time as well. There's no more MSN/Windows Live Messenger for instance. I bet no one saw that coming back then either seeing as MS is such a large corporation with with endless amounts of money. Yet that didn't secure the platform's future existence.
