My theory about unacknowledged applications is that there are just so many applications these days. This isn't really an acceptable excuse for not replying, but it might be a reason.

And a factor to blame in there is the existence of consolidation web sites which scrape the job agency web sites, then allow you to do a search, "add results to basket" and "apply to all".

Some people won't even have read all the job descriptions for all the jobs they're applying for, let alone considered whether they might be a remotely suitable candidate.

In the old days you wouldn't take an expensively photocopied CV and an individually written letter to the letter box unless you thought the job was worth applying for.
