To be fair, because I had a similar experience, it's not the loans that are the problem. It's the interest rates they slap on it, which is the perfect example of why usury is so evil. I had a $5K loan and within 3 years it had ballooned to $15K debt. Making monthly payments, I barely touched the principal before it got away from me.
