The report system being used as a way to filter content in Amethyst is a mistake, alongside automated blocks:
- Reports never expire. This means that false reports, or reports relating to very old posts from that account will permanently affect the account.
- This inconveniences regular users more than spammers. If someone gets mass reported, they cannot move their identity and followers without it being a slow process, and losing a massive amount of their followers, because people that follow them are also prevented from seeing their posts.
- Spammers do not have a long term identity they have to worry about, so they can just create a new public key, and continue doing whatever.
- WoT is not flawless. If a popular account sprinkles a few bots or alternate identities in who they follow which they use to mass report people, they can basically censor certain users.
- Reports are not reviewed by anyone. At least with traditional social media, mass reports have a chance of being dropped. Not with trusting any reports from whoever you follow + whoever those people follow.
