Government schools were designed to create obedient workers.
I'm not going to judge the past in this case because it was a different time and I wasn't there. Plus, it's a fruitless endeavor for my purposes here.
However, people should question them now. People should judge them now. Do you really want your children to be mindless drones? That's what you're signing up for with government schools.
You can spend time undoing their conditioning (most don't), but that seems risky and wasteful. It's probably better to build your own plan from scratch and find others with similar goals.
I don't have children, but I remember the brutality of sitting in a hard desk for a Ford forty learning how to go nowhere fast.
